We condemn the death of the 25-year-old while under police custody, and we demand justice.
This recent death of a detainee, earlier incidents of false arrests, and the alarm raised by various groups should prompt a closer scrutiny of Oplan RODY (Rid the Streets of Drunkard and Youth): the manner and circumstances of the arrests, as well as accosting and the detention procedures of authorities. Were they done within the bounds of the law?
We have seen the bloodshed and rights violations as a result of Oplan Tokhang. We are alarmed that we are seeing shades of the anti-illegal war in this revived campaign against “tambays,” who are mostly poor.
We support statements and resolutions in both the Senate and the House of Representatives calling for investigation on this drive.
Finally, we question the motivation for this campaign. Is it to distract us from the real issues that the government has not addressed: of hunger and poverty, lack of jobs and rising prices, corruption in high places?

Kinukundena natin ang pagkamatay ng 25 anyos habang nasa kustodiya ng pulis, at nanawagan tayong mabigyan siya ng hustisya.
Dapat maghudyat ng masusing pagsisiyasat ng Oplan RODY (Rid the Streets of Drunkard and Youth) itong pagkamatay ng isang bihag at ang pangambang tinukoy ng iba’t ibang grupo: ang paraan at sirkumstansya ng mga pag-aresto at pagsita, gayundin ang mga patakaran sa pagpapakulong na ipinapatupad ng mga otoridad. Naaayon ba ito sa batas?
Nasaksihan natin ang pagdanak ng dugo at mga paglabag sa karapatang pantao na resulta ng Oplan Tokhang. Nababahala tayo sa nakikita nating anino ng giyera kontra droga dito sa binuhay na kampanya laban sa mga tambay, na karamihan ay mahihirap.
Sinusuportahan natin ang mga pahayag at resolusyon mula sa Senado at sa House of Representatives na nagpapatawag ng imbestigasyon sa kampanyang ito.
Sa huli, tinatanong natin ang dahilan para sa kampanyang ito. Ito ba ay para ilihis na naman tayo sa mga tunay na isyu na hindi natutugunan ng pamahalaan: ng gutom at kahirapan, kawalan ng maayos na trabaho at tumataas na presyo ng mga bilihin, nakawan sa pinakamatataas na pwesto ng gobyerno?
