Former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Lorenzo ‘Erin’ Tañada warned the National Food Authority (NFA) that farmers will suffer losses and will aggravate their poor condition now than what they have already experienced following the increase in prices of basic commodities.
“We know that rice importation has been the solution posed by the government’s economic managers to press the prices of rice in the market but this will result in very low farmgate prices of palay at this time that our palay farmers are now harvesting their produce. Have mercy on our local farmers because they need their income badly to recover from the high cost of fuel that they used for their water pump and tractor during the planting season,” explained Tañada.
Based on the announcement of NFA following the meeting of the NFA Council on October 24, 2018, the second phase of the minimum access volume of importation of rice is expected to arrive starting this October until February next year.
“The government should not be protecting only the consumers in urban areas. We should understand that while the prices of rice increased, the income of farmers did not get the same increment. So who got the windfall profit? Why is the government not investigating the role of private traders in the significant increase of prices in the market?
These were the questions posed by the former representative of the fourth district of Quezon in a statement released to the media today. Tañada filed his candidacy for senator in the 2019 elections.

Pagbaha ng imported na bigas maaaring ikalugi ng magsasaka – Tañada
Binalaan ng dating deputy speaker ng House of Representatives, Lorenzo ‘Erin’ Tañada ang National Food Authority (NFA) na maaaring ikalugi ng mga magsasaka ang pagbaha ng mga imported na bigas sa panahon ng anihan.
“Alam nating makakatulong ito sa pagbaba ng presyo ng bigas sa pamilihan pero maawa kayo sa mga magsasakang nag-aani ngayon ng palay. Kapag inilabas ng NFA sa pamilihan ang mga imported na bigas ngayon, babaratin ng mga traders ang pagbili ng mga inaning palay ng mga magsasaka. Tangkilikin natin ang lokal na palay sa kasalukuyang aniihan upang kumita ang mga magsasaka. Kailangan nila ito upang makabawi sa hagupit ng mataas ng presyo ng gasolina,” paliwanag ni Tañada.
Ayon sa announcement na inilabas ng NFA mula sa pulong ng NFA Council noong October 24, 2018, inaasahang darating ang ikalawang bulto ng minimum access volume ng imported rice ngayong Oktubre hanggang Pebrero ng susunod na taon.
“Hindi lamang mga consumer sa urban areas ang dapat na pinoprotektahan ng pamahalaan. Tumaas man ang presyo ng bigas sa pamilihan, hindi naman tumaas ang kita ng mga magsasaka. Sino ang kumita sa mataas na presyo ng bigas? Bakit hindi pa naiimbestigahan ang mga private traders na maaaring may kinalaman sa pagtaas ng presyo ng bigas sa merkado?”
Ito ang mga tanong na ibinato ng dating congressman ng ikaapat na distrito ng Quezon sa isang pahayag na inilabas sa media ngayon. Tumatakbo si Tañada bilang senador sa darating halalan sa 2019.
